Dementia Research Project

Working  with Sunderland University and Sunderland Clinical Commissioning Group, centre staff are undertaking research into knowledge about and perceptions of dementia within the black and minority ethnic communities in the City. This work is being undertaken in order to inform ourselves of the issues faced by dementia sufferers and those who care for them so that we can deliver effective support and training for carers and family members based on a better understanding of the problems they face.

Dementia Research

Memory lane is run by Sunderland Bangladesh International Centre. It will help the Centre to meet the needs of a growing elderly population and to provide relevant and valuable services to the communities that we serve.

If families and carers are well informed  about dementia they will be better able to care for those they are looking after. The project also provides some services directly for people suffering from dementia that help to stimulate memory through providing a relaxing and safe environment in which they can socialise. The carers benefit from the support of others in a similar situation.
The project is overseen by a steering group than includes representative of the local BME community, Age Uk, University of Sunderland and the local authority.the Sunderland University Scholl of Health will undertake an evaluation to assess the impact of the project and make recommendations.

There is lots of help available for people with dementia but for various reasons it does not always reach into BME communities. Memory Lane aims to make sure that our local BME communities are well informed about dementia and about the services, treatments and activities available.
